While winter weather continues to remind us that it’s still very much January, the Borough of Wyomissing's Parks & Recreaetion Department is already looking ahead to sunshine, fresh air, and the return of one of our most beloved traditions — the Summer Playground Program.

With the recent snowfall and “feels like” temperatures, it may be hard to picture warm summer days just yet, but now is the time to begin building the team that helps make our playgrounds such a special place for families each year.

The Borough is now accepting applications for both Playground Program Coordinator and Playground Counselor positions. These roles are perfect for individuals who enjoy working with children, love being outdoors, and are passionate about bringing creativity, energy, and positivity to our community’s summer programming.

Staff members play an important role in creating a safe, welcoming, and engaging environment for children throughout the Borough. From leading games and activities to helping build friendships and summer memories, our playground staff truly help deliver the “Best Day Ever” experience for Wyomissing’s families.

The Program Director and Playground Facilitator will review all applications and begin scheduling interviews in the coming weeks.

Residents are also encouraged to share this opportunity with anyone they feel would be a great fit for the program. Many of our strongest staff members come through referrals from within the WyomissingREC community.

Summer may feel far away, but it will be here before we know it — and we look forward to building another outstanding team for the 2026 season.

The Borough of Wyomissing reminds residents that Monday, January 26 is the final day for curbside Christmas tree collection for the season.

To ensure a smooth and efficient pickup, please place your tree at the curb no later than the morning of January 26 and be sure it is fully prepared for collection. All trees must be free of decorations and materials, including plastic bags, stands, ornaments, hooks, lights, tinsel, or any other attachments.

Please note that trees should not be placed in bags. Bagged trees will not be collected, as plastic and other materials interfere with the recycling and disposal process.

This service allows the Borough to safely and responsibly manage post-holiday cleanup while keeping streets and neighborhoods tidy. Residents who miss the final pickup date should make alternate arrangements for proper disposal.

The Berks County Solid Waste Authority (BCSWA) is once again offering a series of spring collection events designed to help residents safely and responsibly dispose of difficult-to-handle items while protecting the environment.

The mission of the Berks County Solid Waste Authority is to manage solid waste and recyclable materials in an environmentally safe, reliable, and efficient manner, and these seasonal events are an important part of that commitment. By providing convenient drop-off opportunities, BCSWA helps keep harmful materials out of landfills and waterways while making proper disposal easier for residents.

The Borough of Wyomissing is accepting applications from Borough residents that are interested in serving a one-year term on the Borough’s Finance and Administration Committee in the resident, non-Councilmember position. The position is voluntary and unpaid.

The Finance and Administration Committee is responsible to Borough Council and reviews financial, personnel and administrative matters as directed by Borough Council. Interested candidates should have a general understanding of municipal finance, policy and law. The Committee meets monthly at 8am on the Thursday the week before the regular Borough Council meeting, which is held on the second Tuesday of the month. Finance and Administration meetings typically last sixty to ninety minutes. Attendance is also required at special budget meetings held in October and November to review and approve the draft budget for the upcoming year.

In order to be considered for either position, please submit a letter of interest that includes your experience and qualifications, to mbare@wyomissingboro.org no later than 9am on Wednesday, January 28, 2026.

The Borough of Wyomissing would like to inform residents that curbside leaf pickup operations have officially ended for the season. The Public Works Department will no longer be collecting leaves from streets throughout the Borough until the program resumes next fall.

We ask all residents to please stop placing leaves or any yard debris in the roadway. Material left in the street can block storm drains, contribute to localized flooding, and create hazards for drivers, pedestrians, and cyclists—especially during winter weather events.

While curbside leaf collection has concluded, regular yard waste collection will resume on April 13th. At that time, residents may once again place acceptable yard waste materials at the curb in accordance with Borough guidelines.

Until yard waste service returns, leaves and other yard materials should be stored on your property until collection begins again in the spring.

Your cooperation helps keep Wyomissing’s streets, stormwater system, and neighborhoods safe and well-maintained throughout the winter months. We appreciate everyone doing their part to keep our community clean and ready for the season ahead.

Effective January 1^st, Hollenbaugh’s Trash & Recycling will officially take over recycling collection in the Borough of Wyomissing. While the hauler is new, your pickup schedule remains unchanged from 2025 — so you can continue recycling on your regular day.

The recycling industry has undergone significant shifts in recent years. Fewer carriers and haulers are willing to collect certain materials because the market for recyclables has become oversaturated. This means many items that were once accepted are no longer profitable to process, forcing haulers to narrow their focus to materials with strong, sustainable demand.

One of the most important changes is that flexible plastics — such as plastic bags, film wrap, and pouches — are no longer recyclable in curbside bins. These items contaminate the recycling stream and create costly processing challenges.  When non-recyclable items enter the recycling stream, they increase costs, slow down processing, and often result in entire loads being rejected. By following the updated guidelines, residents help ensure that Wyomissing’s recycling program remains viable and effective.

Other items that are NOT ACCEPTED include:

• Styrofoam
• Plastic utensils
• Mixed-material packaging (e.g., chip bags, juice pouches)

Focus on the “Big 4”

To keep Wyomissing’s recycling program efficient and environmentally responsible, residents should concentrate on these core items:

1. Paper & Cardboard
2. Plastics - #1 and #2 only
3. Metals - aluminum and tin cans
4. Glass

Hollenbaugh Trash & Recycling reminds all Wyomissing residents to have their trash and recycling bins at the curb by 6:00 a.m. on pickup days. Many missed pickups occur simply because bins are not set out in time, which can disrupt the collection schedule and leave residents waiting.

To help ensure that every home receives reliable service, residents are encouraged to place their trash and recycling out the night before their scheduled pickup day. This small step makes a big difference by allowing the collection team to complete their routes efficiently, avoiding missed stops and keeping our streets looking clean and organized.

The Borough of Wyomissing held its annual Borough Council Reorganization Meeting this morning, marking an important and traditional step as the community officially enters the new year.

Presided over by Honorary Judge Bodor, the meeting included the swearing-in of newly elected Borough Council members, as well as Mayor Fred Levering and Tax Collector Betsy Heckman. While the reorganization meeting is largely ceremonial in nature, it represents a meaningful moment for the Borough, formally establishing its elected leadership and setting the foundation for the year ahead.

As part of the reorganization process, Borough Council elected its leadership for 2026. Kristen Gajewski was elected Borough Council President, Jen Reimer was elected First Vice President, and Rick Weinhoffer was elected Second Vice President, establishing the Council leadership team for the coming year.

“This meeting is an important milestone for our community,” said Mayor Fred Levering. “It brings together our elected officials and staff, as we begin a new year of service, collaboration, and continued commitment to keeping Wyomissing a great place to live, work, and enjoy.”

In addition to the oath of office, Borough Council made several key appointments essential to day-to-day operations and long-term planning. The following positions were officially appointed for 2026:

• Borough Secretary: Melissa Miller
• Deputy Tax Collector: Sharon Boyer
• Borough Solicitor: Masano Bradley
• Borough Consulting Engineer: McCarthy Engineering
• Building Code Officials and Zoning Officer: Kraft Municipal Group
• Commercial Zoning Officer: Nick Perilli

These appointments ensure continuity, professional oversight, and effective municipal services for residents and businesses throughout the Borough.

The Reorganization Meeting also included the approval of 2026 Committee, Commission, and Board appointments, which play a vital role in supporting Borough governance, advisory efforts, and community engagement.

Keeping your dog licensed is one of the simplest and most effective ways to protect them—and it plays an important role in helping the Wyomissing community respond quickly when a pet goes missing. In a close-knit borough like Wyomissing, where neighbors look out for one another, a visible dog license tag can make all the difference in reuniting a lost dog with its family.

Licensing your dog is an easy and affordable step that provides peace of mind for pet owners while also supporting local animal control and public safety efforts. A valid license helps reduce confusion during emergencies, assists animal control officers in responding efficiently, and helps pet owners avoid unnecessary fines or delays if their dog is found.

Across Pennsylvania, lost dogs remain a significant concern. Last year, only a small percentage of stray dogs were immediately reunited with their owners, while many others had to be transported to shelters in neighboring counties due to limited space. A license tag is visible to anyone who finds a dog, allowing for quick contact with the owner—something a microchip alone cannot provide without specialized equipment.

A lost dog without identification may never make it home. By licensing their dogs, Wyomissing residents help protect their pets while contributing to a safer, more responsive community. Taking this small step reflects the borough’s shared commitment to caring for pets and looking out for one another.

The Animal Rescue League of Berks County (ARL) is returning to Wyomissing in 2026 with a series of mobile, low-cost vaccine clinics to help keep your pets healthy and protected throughout the year.

All clinics will be held at the Wyomissing Fire Department, 1259 Penn Avenue, from 4:00 to 6:00 PM on the following Thursdays:

March 19th

June 4th

August 6th 

October 8th

These clinics provide a convenient opportunity for dogs and cats to receive their rabies vaccine along with other essential immunizations. Microchipping will also be available, offering added peace of mind for pet owners. Keeping pets up to date on vaccinations is one of the most important steps in protecting both animals and the community.

Rabies is almost always fatal if left untreated, but it is completely preventable with proper vaccination. Whether your pet is due for a routine shot or you’re planning ahead for the year, these clinics make it easy to stay on schedule.

The Borough of Wyomissing will once again offer its 50/50 Sidewalk Replacement Program to help improve the safety and condition of public sidewalks throughout the community.

This voluntary program is a cooperative effort between the Borough and homeowners. The Borough will contribute 50 percent of the repair cost, up to $1,000, for eligible sidewalk repairs completed by participating homeowners.

Homeowners interested in participating must submit an application. Funding is limited and projects are approved on a first-come, first-served basis, with priority given to sidewalks showing significant damage. Borough staff will inspect sidewalks to confirm eligibility before acceptance into the program.

Eligibility is currently limited to:

• Single-family, owner-occupied properties

• Sidewalks that are heaved, broken, or displaced

• Damage caused by Borough-owned or Borough-planted trees

Once applications are reviewed, the Borough will bid the approved repairs as a single project to secure competitive pricing. The Borough will cover half the cost, up to $1,000. Any remaining balance is the homeowner’s responsibility. In cases of severe tree-related damage, alternative repair options may be recommended.

Driveways, curbs, and aprons are not included in this program.
