Borough Urges Residents to Stay Off Ice as Public Works Prepares Pond for Safe Skating

Home Posted on January 20, 2026

The Borough of Wyomissing is strongly urging residents to stay off the ice as Public Works crews work to prepare the pond for safe winter skating. While recent arctic temperatures have created favorable conditions, the ice has not yet been properly groomed or deemed safe for public use.

The Public Works staff has been actively monitoring conditions and taking steps to prepare the ice surface. Unfortunately, repeated foot traffic and instances of rocks being thrown onto the ice have caused damage, slowing the grooming process and creating unsafe conditions. In response, crews placed caution tape around the pond earlier today and will return later this evening to hose down the surface in hopes of grooming the ice in the morning.

The Borough fully understands the deep connection the community has to the pond and the many memories associated with winter skating. The goal remains to open the pond safely as soon as conditions allow. However, continued activity on the ice before it is ready only delays that possibility.

For everyone’s safety—and to allow crews to complete their work effectively—residents are asked to respect posted barriers and stay off the ice until an official announcement is made that skating is permitted. Updates will be shared through Borough communication channels as conditions progress.

Thank you for your cooperation and patience as we work to provide a safe and enjoyable winter experience for the community.
