The Borough of Wyomissing would like to take this opportunity to briefly introduce the concept of WYOways to our citizens. The Borough is fortunate to be experiencing a tremendous amount of re-development and new development along the Penn Avenue and North Park Road corridors. With this intensity of development at such a rapid pace, the Borough has had to accelerate plans to improve the local road and pedestrian/bicyclist network in and around this area.
The Fourth Street Extension will install two roundabouts, one on Innovation Way on the Vanity Fair North Lot and one on North Wyomissing Boulevard. This will provide safer and more direct access for traffic traveling to and from Route 422 to the Vanity Fair North Lot and The Knitting Mills. Fourth Street will be slightly extended to meet the roundabout on the Vanity Fair North Lot.
The Borough also intends to purchase a vacant parking lot located on the southwest side of the intersection of Fourth Street and North Wyomissing Boulevard. A bike share station, bike rack, striped parking spaces, a bench and a BARTA bus stop will be located on this lot. This lot is part of the Borough’s Official Bicycle and Pedestrian Trail Map, also known as WYOways. The route provides access to all areas of the Borough, to multiple recreation areas, to the Wyomissing Area School District and Wilson School District, and to Spring Township, Shillington Borough and West Reading Borough. Sharrows and route signs will be installed on the roadways shown on the trail map for easy identification and use. The route also provides access to existing bike share stations on the Knitting Mills property, Tower Health’s main campus in West Reading, and a station to be installed at the medical school.
The Borough is in the process of applying for two Multi-Modal Transportation Fund (MTF) grants through the Department of Community and Economic Development (DCED) and PennDOT. The two grants would be the basis for the majority of funding for the Fourth Street Extension project. Multiple local businesses, including UGI, Teleflex, Customers Bank, Equus Capital Partners and SlyFox TapHouse at The Knitting Mills, have committed to provide private funding towards the cost of the pedestrian and bicycle trail improvements.
