RECYCLING & BULK ITEM INFORMATION

  • ***IMPORTANT INFORMATION*** --PLEASE READ--

We are receiving complaints from our trash hauler indicating that residents are putting bulk items out for pickup without a valid bulk item ticket. Tickets must be purchased at Borough Hall at a cost of $15 per ticket. If you have more than one item, you will be required to purchase a ticket for each item. Beginning in 2018, residents will be allowed to to put out two (2) items per week, but keep in mind you will also be required to purchase two (2) separate tickets, one for each item.

Because the pickup will be on your normal trash day, you will need to purchase the ticket(s) at least 2 days prior to your trash day.

Examples of bulk items are a couch/sofa, mattress, box springs, reclining chairs, book shelf, office chair, etc.

Electronics, appliances, wood, and car parts are NOT acceptable. These items must be taken to a recycling center. Please call Berks County Solid Waste Office at 610-478-6362 to find a recycling center near you.
    Thank you.

Getting rid of any gently used items as you spring clean this year? Habitat for Humanity of Berk County is here to help. Donations are accepted Tuesday thru Saturday from 9 am to 4 pm. at our ReStore: 5370 Allentown Pike, Temple, PA 19560. Pick-up service is available for larger items such as furniture, and appliances: please call 610-921-1315 to schedule a pick-up time.

Your donations may be tax-deductible!

Each Borough residence is entitled to a
new recycle container.

These were purchased from the Section 902 Recycling Equipment Collection Grant awarded to the Borough.

If you haven’t already picked one up, please call Borough Hall to request a can indicating the size you require between a new 20 gallon can with a lid or a larger 32 gallon container with a lid and it will be delivered to your door.

RECYCLING F.A.Q.

  • Container Requirements

All receptacle cans MUST reflect the word “recycling” on them if being used for recycling.

Please stop by Borough Hall for your free recycling container if you have not yet done so!

  • Construction Material

Construction material (i.e., plasterboard, ceiling tiles, any type of construction or deck wood, fencing, etc.) is not considered to be recyclable or trash within the Borough of Wyomissing. Our current contracted trash hauler will take it as long as you purchase a Bulk Item Ticket. Depending on how much construction material you have, you could need more than one Bulk Item Ticket. The tickets sell for $15 per ticket/per item and can be purchased at Borough Hall. You also have the option of contacting a private hauler who handles construction material to remove the material for you. Due to dangers of mixing construction material with regular trash and recycling, it is imperative this type of material remain separate from normal refuse and/or recycling.  For instance, plasterboard, when broken down in landfill conditions, releases hydrogen sulfide, a toxic gas. Therefore, construction material haulers are better equipped to handle these types of materials. Any construction material that is put out for collection without a Bulk Item Ticket will NOT be picked up by the contracted haulers for the Borough.

  • Cleanliness of Property

On windy days when recycling or trash containers tilt over and the contents spill onto the ground or street, we would appreciate your cooperation in gathering the material and placing it back into the container. We are asking that you be kind enough to maintain your property out of respect to your neighbors and the Borough.

  • Plastic Shopping Bags

Although these bags do have a triangle logo on them, they are not recyclable and will not be collected by our hauler. However you may return them to the grocery store where they will be recycled property. Most businesses have containers located near the front door for your convenience. Please refrain from putting them with your weekly recycling.

  • Plastic Wrap

The plastic wrap that covers water/soda bottles is not recyclable. A triangle logo does appear on the wrap, but unfortunately, the current equipment cannot handle this type of material and therefore, clogs the machinery. It is to be treated as trash.

  • Stationery(with metallic holograms)/Business Cards

These items are not recyclable. They are to be treated as trash. These should not be included with “junk” mail.

  • Styrofoam

Styrofoam is not recyclable. You do have the option of taking it to “Ship for You” or any type of shipping facility to see if they will take it; otherwise, it goes in the trash.

YARD WASTE

The Borough of Wyomissing offers the service of a yard waste program to its residents from March until December.

Yard Waste material is considered to be grass cuttings, leaves, twigs, and the like. It does NOT INCLUDE firewood, stumps, dirt, or rocks.

Never use plastic bags to package yard waste or mix trash and refuse with yard waste. All yard waste must be in a biodegradable paper yard bag (no plastic bags), biodegradable bags are sold at Borough Hall and home improvement stores.

Branches and twigs must be cut into lengths of 4 feet or less and bundled with string. Branches/ twigs cannot be larger than 6 inches or longer than 4 feet. Limit of 10 bundles per pickup.

YARD WASTE F.A.Q.

  • Drop Off Point

A lot of you have asked about a drop off point for yard waste. The Borough of Wyomissing does not own or have a drop off point; therefore, we request that you utilize the yard waste program which runs from March to December (check the current version of the “Talking Trash” for specific dates).

  • Large Branches

If you have large branches (over 4’ in length and larger than 6” in diameter) that have fallen or hanging from trees located in the front of your house, between the sidewalk and the roadway, those trees are considered to be borough trees and you would need to contact our Tree Department at 610-678-9985 for removal of those limbs. Otherwise, any limbs that are smaller than 6” in diameter and do not exceed 4’ in length should be prepared for collection by the yard waste hauler. Yard Waste Recycling is scheduled for every Wednesday from March to December (check the current version of the “Talking Trash” for specific dates.)

  • Yard Waste

All sticks/small branches are to be bundled and tied. They cannot exceed 4’ in length or 6” in diameter. Please do not make the bundles huge, but within reason so that one person can pick it up quickly and thrown it into the truck without it falling apart.

  • Yard Waste Containers and Weight Limit

If you are using trash cans or any type of container for yard waste, please make sure the lid is off the can the day of pickup so the material can be seen from the roadway.

Please keep in mind that the weight of yard waste bags and/or containers (trash cans) cannot exceed 40 pounds. If they are too heavy, they will not be picked up
